The blanket scarf is something I’ve needed my whole life and just didn’t know it. I’m always shivering on planes, always needing something to cover my shoulders, my legs, my hands. Packing a blanket just seems ridiculous. But packing a blanket scarf? Now that’s the perfect compromise. Small enough to count as a scarf but big enough to count as a blanket? You can bet that I’ll never be traveling without one again!

Here are my top five picks:

1 Aerie Blanket Scarf, American Eagle, $29.95 | 2 The Blanket Scarf, Abercrombie & Fitch, $19 | 3 Oversized Plaid Scarf, Target, $16.99 | 4 Diamond Mosaic Blanket Scarf, Aritzia, $80 | 5 Textured Metallic Blanket Scarf, Banana Republic, $79.99

The biggest challenge with the blanket scarf is figuring out how to wear it. When you’re using it as a scarf rather than a blanket, it’s a lot of fabric to contend with. Fear not: Tutorials, suggestions and how-tos abound! Here are some resources to help you figure out exactly how to use your blanket scarf.
